Exploring an Uninhabited Maldivian Island – Vavvaru

Exploring an uninhabited Maldivian island named Vavvaru. It is one of the many uninhabited islands in the Maldives, within the Lhaviyani Atoll. I was able to spend a few hours here with some locals, colleagues, and volunteers. A beautiful island all to ourselves :).

Any island in the Maldives is bound to be paradise, but what most people don’t know is the amount of garbage that is present on every island. If you stay in a resort most of the time you won’t see any evidence of rubbish. That is because the resort staff cleans it up before you get a chance.

On local and uninhabited islands, it’s a different story. Rubbish gets washed up or thrown on the ground by locals and tourists, Vavvaru, is no exception. This island specifically is a popular spot for locals to have picnics and most of the evidence is left behind.

I still found this island beautiful, although it may be covered in rubbish. It is especially different from other islands because it has modern ruins (so to say). The island used to be home to a small coral reef research facility, which has now shifted from the middle of the island to the edge due to the loss of the surrounding reef.

Coral reefs play a great role in protecting islands from large wave action, preventing islands from being shifted or eroded. This island’s shift shows how the absence of a reef can do in just a few short years.
